It's not every day that you get a chance to take a trip back to your high school days, especially when they are good memories and not something you're still talking to your therapist about.  I got that chance recently when I spoke to John McCrea, lead singer of the alternative band Cake, whom I was a huge fan of when I was a teenager.

We talked about their upcoming tour, how they still make playing together exciting after almost three decades, and even what John would like to see in a viral TikTok video for the band.

One thing I found interesting when I asked John how the band keeps things exciting and fresh after so many years, is that he told me they do not have a setlist.  They perform completely on the fly, so they play whatever song feels right in the moment, which I thought was really fun considering most fans have a set list downloaded weeks before they go to a show for some bands.  However, John mentioned his trumpet play is less than thrilled some nights.

I also mentioned how some older bands have found newfound popularity with the help of TikTok videos and reels that have gone viral with their songs to help newer generations discover their music.  I asked John which of Cake's songs would make a good TikTok, and under what context.

His response was perfect.  He wants to see the song Stickshifts and Safetybelts made into a TikTok with someone jumping a motorcycle over a bunch of cars on fire.  So there you go internet, do your magic.
