It was great to catch up with Des Rocs, who has joined us in the studio before, to discuss his new song, which serves as the theme to the popular video game "Borderlands 4".  Side note: Des remembered coming to the station and remembers that I gave him a shirt that he still wears.  Which is awesome.

The Land might be the fitting song for the game, but don't expect Des to be rocking to his song in the game that much.

Des Rocs, Musician, Not Gamer

Des says he's not much of a gamer.  "It's not my universe, which is what made it that much more exciting for me from an artistic perspective.".  And while Des has the theme song in the game, he hasn't even played it since it came out.  "I don't even have a PlayStation, but I have a copy of the game,"  He said, though he has Mario Kart.  So his level of gaming is about the same as mine.

The music world can work in mysterious ways.  Sometimes it takes careful planning and hundreds of phone calls to make the connection; sometimes, the stars just align.

Des said they reached out asking about a song for the game, as he was just starting to write the song.  “I’ll never forget the first call when they told me what they were looking for in a song for Borderlands 4,” says Des. “I couldn’t stop grinning. They were describing exactly where my heart lies. Rock' n’ roll that’s loud, raw, unfiltered, built for a foreign landscape. This song has that unhinged wild energy, the one I felt when I first picked up a guitar. It’s real and it’s rowdy, just like the music I worshipped growing up.”

That's the picture we took when he came to visit...before I gave him the shirt.

Des says the new music is about inner struggle, but he uses war itself as a symbol for the war within.  "Sonically, I'm always exploring.  I think it's important cause I don't want every song to be a big riff."

So with new music out, more on the way, and a recent cover of a Johnny Cash classic, Des is continuing to grow in the rock world.
