In a press release on Monday, the City of Clinton and the Clinton Engineering Department announced that they have concluded that the traffic signals located at the intersection of 6th Avenue North and North 2nd Street are not warranted. The Iowa Department of Transportation concurs with removing the traffic signals at this intersection, according to the release.

As you can see in the Google Maps graphic below, the intersection of 6th Avenue North and North 2nd street is adjacent to the Clinton County Courthouse. It is also one block away from NelsonCorp Field, home to the Clinton Lumberkings.

With 6th Avenue North being one of the roads that head east towards the Clinton riverfront and NelsonCorp Field, some residents on social media shared their concerns on Facebook on Tuesday when the City of Clinton shared the news.

One person mentioned that it may be more difficult to cross North 2nd Street or enter without lights being present,

Another suggests that the City place a police officer after and/or during events,

Another suggested putting in a roundabout which as we all know is not a favorite option for many people.

Regardless, this decision has been made final and will happen next month.

City of Clinton officials said in the press release that the traffic signals will be covered and stop signs placed in all directions on August 15, 2022. The traffic signals will be disconnected and removed on August 31, 2022.

After August 31, traffic on 6th Avenue North will be controlled by stop signs in each direction City officials say. Traffic on North 2nd Street will have the right-of-way and shall be uncontrolled (no traffic signals and no stop signs).

Residents of Clinton who have questions regarding this project can contact the Engineering Department at 563-244-3423.
