Update: Quad Cities Arconic Union Members Authorize Potential Strike
Update: The union says has voted in favor of authorizing a strike if a contract agreement cannot be reached by 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 15.
The Quad Cities has seen numerous strikes over the past 6 months, and now another one is looming as Arconic is set to vote for a potential strike.
Last fall Union workers at John Deere went on strike and after a little over a month, the 10,000 workers agreed on a new deal in November 2021.
Then in the cold winter of February 2022, Eaton Union members went on strike and stayed united through a longer negotiation process compared to John Deere. Eaton came to an agreement on March 23, 2022.
There is already a strike happening in Iowa.
On Monday, May 2 about 430 union members at Case New Holland in Burlington went on strike. The Burlington union members aren't the only ones on strike right now as the plant in Racine, Wisconsin is also on strike bringing the total worker number up to over 1000.
A worker at the Burlington plant told us, "We were working 15+ hour days and they had vans rolling in at noon when we went on strike. They knew they weren't going to negotiate."
Case, like John Deere before them, has also recorded record profits recently. Now, the salaried workers and engineers find themselves running the line while the strike continues.
Arconic is set to vote on a potential strike.
Today (May 12, 2022) USW members will be voting on the potential of a strike. The current contract which was approved in July of 2019 is about to expire and this vote will authorize union leaders to call for a strike if a deal is not reached by Sunday.
With Arconic, it's the same story as the other unions that had to strike to get a new contract. A company reporting massive profits. A group of essential workers putting in extra hours. A current deal that workers feel is not in line with the profits vs. the work and the search for a fair contract.
The workers will be holding a rally tonight:
Bring your kids, family and friends and let's show Arconic that we are Essential, and we deserve a Fair Contract!! We will meet at the Union Hall between 4:00-4:30pm. At 4:30 we will walk as one down to the Arconic main entrance and rally until 7:00pm. If you can't make the walk, we will meet you there!!
Get more details on the rally on their Facebook event page.
Arconic is one of the largest companies in the Quad Cities with about 2,400 people.
Workers at Arconic plants in Indiana, Tennessee, and New York are also negotiating a new contract.
