From February 13 - March 13, Iowans had the chance to take part in selecting the Top Ten Burger Restaurants in the state by submitting nominations.

The Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association facilitated the process by collecting the votes and compiling the list. The coveted Top Ten is officially comprised of the following eateries.

2023 Iowa's Best Burgers Contest

A panel of anonymous judges will visit each Top Ten Restaurant and evaluate the burgers based on taste, appearance, and proper doneness (160 degrees Fahrenheit). The judge's scores will be accumulated and the winner of the 2023 Iowa's Best Burger Contest will be announced on May 1st. A great way to kick off May Beef Month.

“In total, we collected 6,414 votes for 509 Iowa restaurants,” said Kylie Peterson, Director of Marketing for the Iowa Beef Industry Council. “This year’s Top Ten restaurants are award-winning worthy, but are only a few of the many restaurants in Iowa that do an outstanding job of promoting and serving our beef products to their customers on behalf of Iowa’s beef farmers.”

Last year, The Flying Elbow in Marshalltown took home the title of 2022 Iowa’s Best Burger.

The Flying Elbow is a wrestling-themed hot dog joint in Marshall town Iowa. Although they are known for their all-beef and vegan hot dogs, this place was recognized to serve some awesome burgers. Just by viewing their social media, this place looks like a fun time. Every food photo features a mini-pro wrestler. They take their theme seriously.

10.) Arty’s Ice Cream & Grill, Wilton

Burgers AND Ice Cream? Now that's a great combo. Arty's Ice Cream & Grill, located in Wilton Iowa was nominated for its delicious Burgers. Arty's also has a food truck called "Arty's on Wheels" that can be spotted around the Quad Cities, offering a solid menu of Burgers, banana splits, and tenderloins.

8.) Birdies, Burgers, and Brews @ The Hillcrest, Graettinger

Enjoy a meal and some drinks after a round on the course! One of the best burgers on the top 10 list can be found at Hillcrest Golf & Country Club. The menu is full of options including steaks, burgers, pasta, sandwiches, appetizers, and much more.

7.) Burger & Company, Spirit Lake

Prepared from Scratch is essential at Burger & Company. Fresh ingredients, handmade burgers, a little LOVE, and special attention. Layers of flavor go into each bite. Burger & Company has won multiple awards such as the Nashville Burger week 2020 & 2021 – Best Unique Toppings and Best Burger Overall in 2022.

 

6.) Fishback & Stephenson Cider House, Fairfield

Fishback & Stephenson Cider House is an award-winning burger restaurant and Cider Pub. Features family-owned local farm-to-table beef and house-made hard cider. The Adrian family raises all of their beef and personally cares for them every step of the way, from birth to harvest to delivery. They are pasture raised in Jefferson County and farm-finished with Apple Mash from their hard cider process. The finishing process gives every cut a unique, sweet, and buttery taste.

 

5.) Foodie Garage Eatery, Dubuque

Foodie Garage is a garage-themed restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Located in Dubuque since 2020, and after only 2 years, they are popularly known for their burgers and steaks.

4.) Flight Bar + Grille, Huxley

Hailing from a small town in eastern Iowa, they purchased a home in Huxley in 2017, hoping to raise their family in the quiet community near Ankeny and Ames. This bar and grill aren't very active on social media, but according to the locals, this place has great reviews. "Jeromimo’s catered my daughter's wedding reception and the dinner was fantastic! Compliments from the family from all over the United States. Couldn’t have asked for a more accommodating staff! They are truly the best," one review said.

2.) Parlor on Main, Central City

Ice cream and burgers? I can't think of a better combination. Parlor on Main is located in Central City Iowa just to the East of the Wappsi River. Take a stroll after you're full from eating Burgers and Ice cream.

1.) Troy's Bar & Grill, Earling

"Voted Top 10 burgers in Iowa! About an hour drive from Omaha and worth it! My husband got the Mac n cheese burger and I got the plumbers special with bbq and jalapeños. We loved everything and will definitely be back!" Said a review on Yelp.

These top 10 burger joints are in the running and the winner will be announced on May 1st.

To qualify in the contest, the burger must be a 100% real beef patty served on a bun or bread product. Burgers may include any combination of condiments, sauces, cheese, or toppings.
