My cousin told me he was on his way home from the Quad Cities and stopped in Moline to grab a Busch Light.  I can only presume he wanted to have a drink with the slice of pizza he bought once he got home because drinking and driving is illegal and no one should do it.

As he was paying for his tallboy, the cashier told him they couldn't sell him just one beer, that he had to also buy...a second tallboy or a couple of shooters to go along with it.

He was baffled, but went ahead and bought a second tallboy to take home with him for supper (or for his friend...definitely not to drink on the way home).

What's The Deal

I had to figure out why this is the case.  Why would they turn down the sale of one beer to someone but had no problem selling 2 beers or a beer and a shot to anyone who walked in?

The Single Serve Law

As of 2020, you can no longer buy single servings of alcohol "to go" inside the City of Moline.

They made the law to deter people from walking around the city with open containers of beer, mini liquor bottles, or even single servings of wine (for the high-class derelict, I guess).

Now, you can no longer buy less than 48 ounces of alcohol at a time.  So they make you buy more than 48 ounces of alcohol per transaction.

Best Case Scenario: The gas stations have found a loophole.

Worst Case Scenario: They don't understand the law &/or haven't been caught yet.

Ta-Da!  Now We're Compliant!

I don't know if this is ubiquitous throughout the whole city or just one clerk at a random gas station, but at least I can sleep at night knowing the reasoning.
