One of the best things about living in the Quad Cities is the ability to almost any night of the week find a concert, or play, or comedy show to go see.  There are multiple venues in both Iowa and Illinois who regularly host a number of such activities.  I know almost everyone reading this has at one time attended some kind of show or art exhibit like this.  The bottom line is that it takes donations from people just like us to keep these types of venues and activities up and running, not just ticket or admission sales.  If we want to continue to enjoy various types of entertainment in the Quad Cities, we need to do our part to keep it alive and thriving.

The Village Theatre, tucked away in the East Village of Davenport is one such venue.  Originally built in 1891 as the Turner Hall of East Davenport, it even served as a speakeasy during prohibition.  It is now owned and operated by the New Ground Theatre and is home to mainly live theater productions, many of which are first run straight from New York.  The Village also hosts concerts(which I know a lot of our I-Rock 93.5 listeners are familiar with) and also comedy shows, open mic nights, and even movie premieres by independent film makers.

I spoke with general manager Matt Moody about a recent birthday fundraiser he has initiated to help with repairs and improvements for the theater.  Moody tells me he plans to fix the ceiling both backstage and in the green room due to water damage from a since repaired roof leak.  He also plans to change out the broken wooden railing across the balcony to add in a bar all the way across for a more "VIP" experience for guests including charging ports and a spot for drinks.

The Village Theatre really is a hidden gem in the East Village, and if you ever get the chance to attend any event there, you should definitely take it.  However, the only way we will continue to get those chances is if we do our part to support community venues like this one in the Quad Cities.  You can check out Matt Moody's birthday fundraiser here, and please consider donating, it will certainly count as your good deed for the day.
