John Deere Classic Announces New Dates For 2022
For the first time in its 50 year history, the John Deere Classic will have new dates in 2022. These dates will hopefully attract new players to come and play in Silvis. Hopefully, this will be a great move for the JDC and we'll see even more top golfers coming to the Quad Cities.
In a press release on its website, officials from the John Deere Classic said that for the first time in its 50-year history, the 2022 John Deere Classic will be played two weeks before The Open Championship, June 27-July 3, as part of a larger strategic alliance between the PGA Tour and the European Tour.
John Deere Classic tournament director Clair Peterson said in the press release,
“We’re very excited that the 2022 John Deere Classic will be played two weeks before The Open Championship. The new date will give us the opportunity to attract players who otherwise might not have considered the John Deere Classic because they felt the need to travel to the United Kingdom the week before The Open. Now we have a chance to attract those players.”
According to the press release, since 2004, the tournament has been scheduled the week before The Open Championship, except for 2016 when it was played concurrently with the Rio Olympics in August. From 1999-2002, it was played the week after The Open.
It is not known whether the date change will be permanent or relatively consistent moving forward. The PGA Tour retains the right to schedule tournaments on dates it believes are appropriate.
In place of the JDC, The Barbasol Championship at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky is now scheduled the week before The Open Championship.
John Deere’s title sponsorship agreement with the PGA Tour runs through 2023.
This year, Lucas Glover won the 2021 John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run with a score of 19-under par. Glover came back from four shots behind in the final round to win by two. It was the first victory in 10 years for the 2009 U.S. Open champion.
