9 Hilarious Comments About Latest Scary Sinkhole In Illinois
Do you have a fear of sinkholes? In Illinois, sinkholes don't happen as often as they appear in Florida, but when we do, they're huge. People are reacting to a sinkhole that has closed down Illinois 185 between Hillsboro and Coffeen.
What is the Fear of Sinkholes Called
The fear of holes is called Trypophobia, and many have a fear of sinkholes so strong that it keeps them awake at night. I don't know if that's true, but it is for one of my coworkers.
A couple of years ago, another sinkhole swallowed up part of an apartment building in Florida and my coworker had trouble sleeping for fear that the earth would open up under her apartment.
It didn't help that a huge hole appeared out of nowhere on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago, so now she had a fear of leaving the house thinking she might get swallowed up on the way to work.
You can't blame her for having some fear. A sinkhole has almost no warning sign in most cases. This new giant one is on a farm right beside a highway. Can you imagine being on your tractor working the field and BOOM, the ground opens up and you (and the tractor) disappear?!?!?!
Location of Most Recent Sinkhole in Illinois
About 50 miles south of Springfield, a sinkhole has gotten so big that all of Illinois 185 between Hillsboro and Coffeen has been shut down.
The size of the sinkhole keeps growing, so the highway is likely to remain closed for some time while experts come up with a plan.
