If you’re getting a little tired of dealing with people on scooters and e-bikes in Illinois, you might be getting your wish.

No, they aren’t banned, but there’s going to be some major regulations placed on those things real soon.

Curbing the Chaos: Major E-Bike and Scooter Regulations Coming to Illinois

I’m not against the idea of using scooters and e-bikes, but I’m not a fan of the recklessness in which I’ve seen them ridden, and truth be told, I’m not surprised something is being done to prevent what’s been going on.

I’ve seen numerous wrecks on e-bikes over the past few years and even had a close call with a kid on one not long ago.

The Push for Safer Streets: Why New Rules Are Necessary

Looks like lawmakers are getting ready to regulate high-speed “motor-driven” cycles, either gas or electric, that go faster than 28 mph. There is also talk of making it mandatory to have licensing, registration, and insurance.

That’s not all, though, as anything that goes faster than 28 mph will be banned from sidewalks, bike lanes, and trails.

Speed Limits for Sidewalks: Banning Fast Cycles from Shared Paths

Here’s the kicker, though, if you’re a parent, age requirements. Riders must be at least 15 for 20-mph e-bikes and 16 for 28-mph models.

If legislation passes, which I can’t see any reason why it won't, it won’t take effect until July 1, 2027.
