According to Illinois Policy, there is a "candy" tax in Illinois but it doesn't actually impact every candy you are looking to buy for trick-or-treaters this Halloween. What exactly is this "candy tax"? On their site, they say...

"Illinois only considers treats “candy” if they’re prepared without flour, such as Starburst, Skittles and M&Ms. Sweets containing flour such as Kit Kats, Twix and Snickers are all considered groceries, not candy...Candy is taxed at 6.25%, groceries at 1%. Buying Twix bars instead of Hershey’s milk chocolate bars could save you extra money for trick-or-treaters."

The article goes on to mention how Illinois is the only state of the 10 most populated states in the US with a grocery tax, a tax that is helping bring in a total projected sales tax of $11 Billion in 2023, to read more click here!

Illinois just drives you nuts... So you're telling me that lawmakers decided "We should tax candy wayyyyy higher than groceries, but Snickers isn't candy because it is made with flour" You can't make this stuff up... Trust me, I am GLAD the good candy like Snickers, Twix, Kit Kats and so on are not taxed as highly, it is just crazy that candy is taxed at a higher rate at all. When you read stuff like this it makes me want to not only drive across the Mississippi River for just my gas but I might have to start buying my groceries and candy across the river just to stick it to the man... Or, am I being silly?
