Iowans Are Spending Less on Health Insurance Than Most Others In The Country

Health insurance is expensive.  Duh.  You already know that.  And prices keep going up.  Yep, you knew that one too.  But depending on where you live in America, you might be spending anywhere from 4.66% to 20.86% of your household income on health insurance.  So where does Iowa fall in that range?

Health insurance premiums have climbed sharply in recent years, rising by 5% for individual plans and 6% for family plans in 2025 alone.

Wallathubs Chip Lupo says, “Inflation has driven up health insurance premiums significantly in recent years, making it harder and harder for Americans to afford proper health care. Being without insurance is even more dangerous, though, as medical debt is one of the most common reasons people file for bankruptcy. People in certain states feel the pressure of high premiums more than others, as they can cost as much as 21% of the median income in some states and less than 5% in others.”

Or if you're negative, you could say Iowa is the 17th most expensive state.  But you should be glass 1/2 full.  And this is like glass 2/3 of the way full!

The average Iowa household spends 7.95% of its monthly income on health insurance.  That is actually the lowest in the Midwest, other than straight north of us.  Minnesota is at 5.9%.

Meanwhile, Illinois is spending 9.1%, and Wisconsin is at 9.3%.

If you are looking for that sweet 4.66% number, then you will need to move to Maryland.  And if for some reason you ever have to move to West Virginia, get ready to spend 20.86% of your income on health insurance.  The most in the country.
