If you know about Ash Costello, Nikki Misery, and New Years Day it shouldn't surprise you that when we told them they would be doing the interview in an old haunted funeral home they got excited.  Then we added in Bloody Marys and they were extra thrilled!

We had a chance to talk with them before they rocked the Capitol Theatre in Davenport and it was not a serious conversation...it was a fun one!  Yes, we talked about music, but also horror, haunted houses, and some great tour stories in the podcast below.

New Years Day Is Tighter Than Ever

We started the conversation talking about music and the band.  Ash did say they are working on a new cover song that should be out soon.  More importantly, she said the band is the tightest they've been.

"When you're in a band it's like having five boyfriends or five girlfriends and there is a lot of dynamics," said Ash.  She continued by saying, "We are at a place in our relationship where we are so tight and supportive.  We understand each other and communication is great."

A Lot Of New Years Day Tour Stories

New Years Day has been out on the road since 2005 with Ash on vocals.  Nikki joined in 2011 as lead guitar...and wow they have road stories!

They accidentally opened for Rammstein.  How do you accidentally open for a band?  Well, Ash said their bus broke down on the way to the show so they got in late.  Lucky for them, the band that was supposed to be directly open for them did not show so New Years Day took their spot in front of thousands of people.

Nikki chimed in with "Witchita". That's when he got to watch his own band play.  Ash said she thought Nikki had broken his hand because he was playing so badly.  But no, he was just that drunk.  "I looked at our Tour Manager and told him to get him off stage and put him on the bus.  One song into it I'm looking and Nikki is in the crowd cheering for us."

It was such a great conversation with a couple of musicians who are also just fans.  Fans of rock, horror, tattoos, and much more.  You can listen below as they about:

  • The Quad Cities haunted house they visited.
  • Who their influences are.
  • The song they play, and why, before shows.
  • Their cameo in the Ice Nine Kills "Rainy Day" video.
