Founded in Detroit in 1989, the Insane Clown Posse, or ICP, quickly found an audience for their unique style of hip hop, called “horrorcore,” that blends supernatural and horror-themed lyrics with traditional hip hop beats. The group, comprised of founding members Shaggy 2 Dope and Violent J, have released more than fifty albums and collaborated with artists ranging from Three 6 Mafia to Vanilla Ice to Jack White.
In addition to their music, Insane Clown Posse, has also developed fans through other ventures, including producing and starring in a pair of feature films: “Big Money Hustlas” and “Big Money Rustlas.” They have also ventured into professional wrestling, contributing music to albums released by both the World Wrestling Federation and World Championship Wrestling in the late 1990s. ICP eventually formed its own wrestling promotion, dubbed Juggalo Championship Wrestling.
Fans of the group are known as “Juggalos.” According to the group, Juggalos come from all walks of life and often consider themselves a family. ICP live performances are typically marked by attending Juggalos spraying bottles of Faygo-brand soda at the stage. The annual festival for ICP fans, the “Gathering of the Juggalos,” has drawn as many as 20,000 attendees. Rappers such as Busta Rhymes, Ice Cube, and MC Hammer have all performed at various “Gatherings” since the year 2000.
