A man offering free hugs outside of a Madison restaurant was arrested this weekend for damage to property, threats to law enforcement, and resisting arrest.

According to the Madison Police Department, Jeffrey Johnson was standing outside of a restaurant in the 1200 block of Williams Street, offering free hugs. Usually this is a nice gesture, but only if the people have a choice in hugging the person or not.

It would seem that Jeffrey wasn't too happy with anyone not giving him a hug, because he'd reportedly become confrontational and try to fight the people who said no.

By the time officers arrived, Jeffrey was gone, but they located him nearby at the Willy Street Fair and took him into custody.

While being detained, Johnson also allegedly began spitting and kicking at officers, making threats, and ended up damaging one of the Madison Police Department's cruisers.

Jeffrey Johnson was booked on:

  • One count of disorderly conduct
  • Five counts of misdemeanor bail jumping
  • Three counts of felony bail jumping
  • Damage to property
  • Threats to law enforcement
  • Resisting arrest
