Watch Metallica’s Kirk Hammett Join UFO Onstage in Los Angeles
Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett joined UFO onstage in Los Angeles last Saturday (Oct. 12), sitting in with the English rockers for performances of their classic '70s tracks "Doctor Doctor" and "Shoot Shoot."
It happened at the Hollywood stop of UFO's current "Last Orders" 50th anniversary tour, which serves as both a celebration of the hard rock act's longevity as well as the final UFO tour for longtime singer Phil Mogg. The gig at historic L.A. nightclub Avalon last week — which also saw a performance by Armored Saint — was dubbed a "Pre-Cruise Party" for Megadeth's rock-themed Megacruise 2019, which set sail the following day. See some video of Kirk Hammett joining UFO onstage down toward the bottom of this post.
"I having been playing the song 'Shoot Shoot' for all my musical life, it was amazing to play it with them," Hammett said Sunday (Oct. 13) while sharing fan-captured footage of the onstage collaboration. "Thanks to Phil and Andy Neil and Vinnie, and Rob for such a great time last night!"
"Doctor Doctor" and "Shoot Shoot" each emerged as album singles from UFO in the mid-'70s. The former was first released on 1974's Phenomenon; the latter from 1975's Force It. However, "Doctor Doctor" ultimately became the band's first big hit thanks to a live version subsequently issued in 1979.
Perhaps Hammett's keeping his chops up for when Metallica perform two sets apiece at five U.S. festivals next year. The veteran shredders recently toured Europe before Metallica frontman James Hetfield entered rehab for addiction treatment. For Metallica tickets on future tour stops, check here.
