Junior College Pitcher Tackles Hitter After Homerun

Video has gone viral of a junior college pitcher tackled a hitter who had just hit a home run during a game Weatherford College and North Central Texas College on Wednesday night.

It was the top of the sixth inning of a seven-inning battle, Josh Phillips from North Central Texas College hit the go-ahead run and was in the middle of rounding the bases, celebrating with his coaches after breaking the tie.

As he rounded third, 6' 3", 195-pound pitcher Owen Woodward threw his glove down to the ground and sprinted from the mound to tackle Phillips, crumpling and crushing him as he turned and saw Woodward.

It looked as though there was about to be a full-on brawl between teams, but it started and finished with some shoving.

"We are shocked and disappointed at what happened in our game today," Jeff Lightfoot, Weatherford's baseball coach, said in a statement. "We do not condone this type of behavior. We have worked hard to build a program with the highest of standards. We are completely embarrassed by this incident, and we apologize to North Central Texas College and the fans of WC baseball. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated."

At this time, the school has just said that they are investigating the incident.

"The WC student in question will face potential disciplinary action from the Office of Student Services up to and possibly including expulsion," the school said. "The Weatherford College Police Department is also investigating the incident and has taken statements."

Lightfoot said Woodward hasn't had any previous incidents.

The game was the first in a four-game series, but umpires suspended the game after the incident.
