A large-scale recall affecting more than 250,000 cases of shredded cheese was quietly issued in early October, according to a newly released Food and Drug Administration report. The recall, initiated by Great Lakes Cheese Co. on October 3, is listed as “ongoing” as of the FDA’s December 1 classification date.

Popular Store Brands Included

The report shows several major retailers were impacted, including Target, Aldi, Walmart, and H-E-B. Store-brand products such as Good & Gather, Happy Farms, Great Value, and Hill Country were all named. According to the FDA, the issue stems from “potential metal fragments from supplier raw material.”

Class II Recall Issued

The incident was labeled a Class II recall, meaning the products could “cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” While the risk level is considered moderate, officials advise customers to check their refrigerators and discard any affected products.

Dozens of States Affected

More than 30 states were included in the distribution list, ranging from Alabama and California to Minnesota, New York, New Mexico, and Wisconsin. Puerto Rico was also identified as a distribution point.

The FDA report also noted that Great Lakes Cheese Co. did not issue a public news release regarding the recall. The company “did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday,” according to the report.

Consumers who believe they may have purchased recalled cheese are encouraged to review the FDA’s full list of affected products and lot numbers.
