Missouri Man Blames Crocs for Crashing Truck Into Kum & Go, Then Fleeing the Scene
Authorities in Springfield, Missouri, say a 60-year-old man is facing felony charges after plowing his truck into a local Kum & Go, causing thousands in damage—then allegedly fleeing and returning twice without confessing. Dale Hamit reportedly told police that the crash happened when his Crocs “got caught in the pedal,” leading to an unintended burst of acceleration into the store’s front windows.
Caught on Camera, But Not Caught Immediately
Security footage from the February incident shows Hamit’s 2012 Dodge Ram slamming into the convenience store. Rather than staying to report the accident, Hamit reversed his vehicle and drove off. Despite his proximity to the store—just half a mile from his home—Hamit returned to the scene not once, but twice, speaking with an employee and even reviewing surveillance footage without admitting his role in the crash.
Charges Filed, Court Date Set
When approached by police at the scene, Hamit initially denied being the driver or owning the involved vehicle. However, after being confronted with video evidence at his residence, he admitted to being behind the wheel and claimed his Crocs caused the mishap. On April 10, Hamit was officially charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage exceeding $1,000—a class E felony. If convicted, he could face one to four years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. His court appearance is scheduled for May 14 in Greene County Circuit Court.
