It’s Kitten Season And Here’s How You Can Help Quad City Shelters
More and more kittens are popping up in Quad City shelters and even if you can't adopt right now, there are ways you can help.
I would adopt every dog and cat under the sun, but alas, my landlady wouldn't be a fan of that. Kitten season is actually a thing, according to the Animal Humane Society, running from April through October. It's an influx of pregnant cats and entire litters that are brought to local shelters.
Adopting a cat, or any pet, is the best thing you can do. I got one of my own cats, Milo, a few weeks after his litter was dropped off in a box at a shelter. I've raised that orange furball from his early days and it's meant a special connection for us both.
The Humane Society of Scott County posted that right now they have about 170 cats and kittens and only 7 of those are adults. Even if you can't adopt, there are ways you can help shelter staff and shelter kittens.
Help Out During Kitten Season
The Humane Society of Scott County has a wish list (for both Amazon and Chewy) of stuff they can always use for their kitties (which, if you're a pet parent, you're likely down these aisles anyway):
- Wet cat or wet kitten food (pate style) (they could also use wet dog food, for you pup owners)
- Newspaper
- Special diet food (like urinary health cat food)
- Kuranda beds
- Heating pads
- Kitten formula
- Scratch and Scratches (link on their wish list)
- Gently used blankets, comforters, towels, and sheets
- Toys
- 'Adopt me' bandanas, vests, harnesses (also dog walking harnesses)
- Post-it notes
- Pens
Volunteer During Kitten Season
You don't have to pay me to take care of dogs and kitties. If you're the same way, consider volunteering at the Humane Society of Scott County or any of the local animal shelters. They can always use extra hands to feed the animals, walk them, take out the litter, etc.
You can also foster a pet and prepare them for their forever homes.
Summer is intense for our local animal shelters so let's help them out however we can!
