15 Illinois Hospitals Receive A “D” In Patient Safety

Not everyone will get A's and that extends to folks in the medical field.

Allergies are running rampant this time of the year. None of us want to get sick (mainly because it's just a big ol' inconvenience) but certainly none of us want to stay a while in the hospital.

Besides being costly, it's not comfy. The doctors and nurses can be super nice but it's not a fun place to be. But if we're there, we want to believe that we're in good care in a safe place, right? We hope we won't catch stuff after being poked and prodded with needles and there's no cross-contamination.

Recently, The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit focused on patient safety, scored hospitals all over the nation on patient safety. It graded them on an A-D scale, focusing on metrics like:

• MRSA (Staph) infections
• C. diff infections (spread by contaminated equipment)
• Infection in the blood
• Infection in the urinary tract
• Surgical site infection after colon surgery
• Sepsis infection after surgery

For a few states, just a couple of 'D' grades occurred. But Illinois has a whopping 15 hospitals that received a 'D' for patient safety. Here are the ones that The Leapfrog Group deemed unsafe.

1. Advocate Christ Medical Center (Oak Lawn)
2. Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital (Downers Grove)
3. Advocate South Suburban Hospital (Hazel Crest)
4. Advocate Trinity Hospital (Chicago)

5. Gateway Regional Medical Center (Granite City)

6. Graham Hospital (Canton)

7. Heartland Regional Medical Center (Marion)

8. HSHS St. Mary's Hospital (Decatur)

9. Roseland Community Hospital (Chicago)

10. SIH Herrin Hospital (Herrin)

11. Springfield Memorial Hospital (Springfield)

12. SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital- Mt. Vernon (Mount Vernon)

13. Thorek Memorial Hospital (Chicago)

14. Weiss Memorial Hospital (Chicago)

15. West Suburban Medical Center (Oak Park)
