Major changes are coming to the Iowa based grocery store chain.

Hy-Vee officials announced earlier this week that they would be removing, altering, or dismantling self check out at a number of their locations.

A company representative confirmed that some stores have already begun phasing out these self-checkout lanes over the past few months.

What's the Reason For the Change?

Officials from the Iowa based grocery store chain claim this changeup is because they want to improve customer service by increasing face-to-face interaction.

However, some reports indicate part of the reason for the switch is due to something called "shrinkage."

Shopify defines shrinkage as the difference between a store’s recorded inventory and its actual stock, which can result from factors such as product damage or shoplifting.

Shrinkage in retail can be caused by a number of factors including product damage or shoplifting.

At retail locations with self-checkout lanes, instances of theft increase by up to 65% compared to traditional checkers, according to reports.

Which Stores Will Keep Self-Checkout & Which Ones Will Get Rid of It?

Unfortunately, there is no list out right now of the Hy-Vee locations that will make this shift just yet. However, we will keep you updated as more news is released regarding this new measure being put into place.

According to a report from the Des Moines Register, several locations in that part of the state have shifted already.

This remains a developing story.
