On Sunday, November 3rd, daylight saving time will end at 2 a.m. Our clocks will "fall" back and we gain an extra hour of sleep.

On the surface, having an extra hour of sleep sounds fabulous. I don't know many people who wouldn't like an additional hour of shuteye to help them feel refreshed in the morning. While this sounds like a no-brainer, awesome idea, the extra sleep we notice might not last as long as we think.

Not only that, this "extra hour" can lead to potential sleep issues, which doesn't help anyone feel refreshed at all!

What Happens When We Move the Clocks Back?

When we "fall back" in November, the reasoning behind this is we will get more Sunlight during the day. If we didn't move the clock backward in the fall, we might not see the sunrise until after 8 a.m. for close to two months during the winter. This means students might have to begin their school day in the dark or anyone who works outside will be working in the dark until around 8.

Are you a fan of when we have to move the clocks forward or backward 1 hour each year? Is it possible the United States would stop doing daylight saving time?

Could Daylight Saving Time Ever Come to an End?

In recent years, momentum has grown for ending daylight saving time. More information is released each year about how these changes affect our sleep cycles and circadian rhythms. According to Harvard Health, it takes about a week to get adjusted to a new clock. The adjustment in the spring, when we lose an hour of sleep, has shown a small increase in heart attacks after we move the clocks forward.

In the last couple of years, the advocacy for stopping daylight saving time has been put before Congress. According to USA Today, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, which was a bill to make daylight saving time permanent. Even though this bill did pass unanimously in the Senate, it did not pass in the U.S. House of Representatives and has not been signed into law.

Another version of ending daylight saving time was brought to Congress in 2023 where it remained idle.

Not Every State Changes Their Clocks

Did you know that not every state in the U.S. participates in daylight saving time? Hawaii and a large chunk of Arizona do not worry about turning their clocks backward in the fall or moving them up an hour in the spring. Arizona decided that adjusting the clocks to make sunset occur an hour later, during the hottest months of the year, was not in the state's best interest.

Hawaii doesn't participate in daylight saving time because of how close it is to the equator. According to USA Today, this is not much difference between hours of daylight throughout the year.

What do you think? Are you in favor of the clocks changing twice a year or do you think we should get rid of daylight saving time? Let us know in the comments!
