Reasons for Cancelling School

As a working parent with school-age children, having school cancelled at the last minute can be frustrating.

Now you have to quickly juggle the day's schedule, find child care, or call off work. It can be a massive headache, but there's one important thing I try to remember every time I'm about to complain...most school cancellations are made with one big thing in mind; your child's safety.

School districts don't take the decision to cancel classes lightly, and there are several factors at play when they do. Schools receive state funding based on the number of days classes are in session and the amount of students who attend each day.

Schools are also allotted a certain amount of emergency days per school year, so if they are going to cancel classes due to weather or other circumstances, like the NFL Draft coming to town, they need to prepare ahead of time for it, or risk losing some state funding.

Green Bay School District Cancels Classes for NFL Draft

I think that we can all agree that the NFL Draft is a big deal, and having it come to your city is an even bigger one.

In anticipation of the 2025 NFL Draft taking place in Green Bay, Wisconsin this week, the Green Bay School District made the decision to cancel classes Wednesday through Friday...

After seeing that post I was shocked to see how many people were complaining about the decision in the comment section. Here are just a few of them...

Seems like a lame reason to be out for three days. Kids need to be in school; schools needs to stop having these lame, ridiculous reasons to cancel class.

Football over learning..no wonder this country is f*#$ed.

Seriously??? So $$$ over education? I guess we know where our priorities are.

Firstly, I'm pretty sure this break has been on the school calendar all year, because the city has known they would be hosting the NFL Draft for quite a while now. It was not a last-minute cancellation. People also commented that the 2024/2025 school year started three days earlier to account for this break. (so, yes, they planned ahead).

Secondly, the amount of congestion and visitors in Green Bay this week will be off the charts, so the decision to cancel school was made primarily to keep kids safe...not so they could stay home to watch or attend the NFL Draft...that's just an added bonus.

Think before you speak, people!
