Sitting at an uncomfortable desk, in an uncomfortable chair, staring at the clock watching the seconds tick by. This is the high school experience for a lot of us. While some kids love going to school, a vast majority (at least in my burnout friend group) couldn’t wait to do anything else. Maybe me and my 2.4 GPA aren’t the best example, but I know there are folks picking up what I’m putting down.

There definitely are some advantages to being a high school student. You don’t have to pay the bills, you get to see your friends on a daily basis, and every once in a while it’s pizza day at lunch. It almost makes sitting in Algebra 1 worth it.

While everyone has a high school experience, some are definitely worse that others. If you’re going to be stuck there for eight hours a day, you’d hope that it would at least be worth it.

The Worst Schools In South Carolina

In South Carolina, there are some great schools that get their students ready for college and equip them with the tools to succeed in the real world. The schools we’re talking about today don’t quite accomplish that goal. According to SchoolDigger, here are some of the worst high schools in the state.

Home of the Swamp Foxes (great mascot), Marion High doesn’t seem that bad when you first look at the numbers. Their student to teacher ratio sit under 16:1 and they have free lunches for every student, but unfortunately the test scores are well below average for the state and the country and the number of teachers employed has been on a downward trend over the last five years.

Even though this tuition-free charter school falls in a pretty well-performing district, they lag behind. With an incredibly high teacher to student ratio and below average test scores, they may want to take some cues from the rest of their district to catch up.

Once again we venture to North Charleston, this time at the home of the North Charleston Cougars. They’ve been a moderately successful school in the past, but have had a rough last ten years. It doesn’t help that there are public charters in the area that rank much higher in the state.
