A Classic Disaster Movie Shot In Iowa Is Getting a Sequel

Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment announced that they are in the works of creating a sequel to the 1996 movie that nearly every Iowan has not only seen, but many have lived through.

Twister, starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, followed storm chasers through the Midwest as they chased storms throughout Oklahoma to deploy an experimental tornado research device during a severe tornado outbreak throughout the state.

The movie blew up the market for the film's featured vehicle, the Dodge Ram - and brought us the Van Halen hit, Humans Being.

What's The Iowa Tie-In Here?

The entirety of the most climactic scene in the movie, when Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt are hiding out in a barn from the F5 tornado was shot in a barn in Eldora. The cornfield the characters run through is near Ames.

Who Will Run The Show?

Now, a little over 25 years later, Universal is creating a sequel to the classic.

Not much is known about the upcoming film, but Frank Marshall is producing the film, with Universal taking the creative lead.

No director has been named yet, though according to Deadline, some of the options include:

• Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi (Free Solo)
• Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, 10 Cloverfield Lane)
• Travis Knight (Missing Link and Kubo and the Two Strings)

What About Stars?

Some of the reports, like from Deadline, say that the studio is hoping to return Helen Hunt, focusing on the daughter she had with the character played by the late Bill Paxton, who passed away in 2017.

When Can We Expect This Twister Sequel?

There's no official date yet, but just know, it's in the works, and with the success of other reboots, like Top Gun: Maverick, it's probably a good guess that this will come through.
