A bakery owner in Chicago got quite a surprise on the other end of a phone call. It resulted in the sweetest reunion for the Give Me Some Sugah owner.

Lenore Lindsey tells TODAY that she never stopped thinking about the baby boy she put up for adoption when she was 17, in 1974. Fast forward to 2008, she opened Give Me Some Sugah bakery in Chicago.

One of her bakery's regulars was 50-year-old Vamarr Hunter, who lived a block away from the bakery. He was 25 when he learned he was adopted. In 2022, he hired a genetic genealogist to help him find his birth mother. He very much wanted to meet her if she was interested. And that's where it takes a sweet turn.

The genealogist reached out to Lindsey with Hunter's name and phone number. Out of caution, Lindsey called him from the bakery line.

He was confused when he saw the bakery's number pop up on his phone. He said:

“I thought, ‘I didn’t order anything,’” he recalled. “Then I heard a voice, and I was like, ‘Miss Lenore?’”

Once they both realized what was happening, they started screaming. By this point, Hunter had frequented Give Me Some Sugah for over a decade.

The timing was good too. Lindsey was recovering from breast cancer surgery and she suffered a stroke soon after they reunited. Hunter didn't have any baking experience but he quit his job to help his mother run the bakery.

As to how it happened, Hunter says:

You can’t tell this story without thanking God. I was just led the entire way.

He says there's been an influx of customers at Give Me Some Sugah. You can keep track of them on their Facebook page.
