Dry Weather Conditions Force Burn Bans In Eastern Iowa Counties

Warm weather and low humidity levels are the reasons most counties in Iowa, northwestern Illinois, and the Quad Cities are under a Red Flag Warning. With the Red Flag Warning going into effect at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, officials in several Eastern Iowa counties have issued a Burn Ban.

The message is simple. Do not burn anything today or tomorrow until the weather gets a little wetter and less windy.

In an email alert Wednesday morning, the Scott County Emergency Management Agency (SCEMA) issued a Burn Ban for the county. SCEMA said in conjunction with the local Fire Chiefs and the State Fire Marshalls Office determined that open burning constitutes a danger to life & property in Scott County, Iowa.

Under Iowa Code 100.40(1), a Burn Ban has gone into effect as of 04/12/2023 at 08:00 am for all of Scott County, Iowa.

Other counties in Eastern Iowa have issued Burn Bans including

Clinton County
Muscatine County
Jackson County
Linn County
Scott County

The reason for these Burn Bans is that current weather conditions could lead to fires spreading rapidly. Low humidity, gusty winds, and dried vegetation are all causes of concern if anyone was to start a fire.

The National Weather Service of the Quad Cities has issued a Red Flag Warning for most counties in the Quad Cities and the surrounding area.

The Red Flag Warning will be in effect from 11 a.m. Wednesday until 8 p.m. for those extreme fire conditions. Winds could gust up to 35 mph today and we'll see relative humidity as low as 22%. Highs in the area will reach into the upper 70s and lower 80s today.

NWS officials say Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

The Burn Ban for counties in Eastern Iowa will be in effect until further notice. When the conditions improve allowing for a lift of the burn ban, further notification will be sent.
