9/11 Remembrance Ceremony At Rock Island Arsenal On Friday
On Friday, the Rock Island Arsenal will remember September 11th with a ceremony.
Friday morning at 10:30, you are welcome to go to the Rock Island Arsenal for their 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. It will be at the arsenal's 9/11 memorial (which is across from Memorial Park). Wear nice clothes, dress is business for civilians and duty uniform for military.
It's hard to believe that the events of September 11th happened 21 years ago. Those of us old enough all remember where we were that day. I was a kid in school and I remember our teachers being told to "turn on your TVs now" after the first plane hit the first tower. Then we saw the second plane hit. It was scary to watch and the school day was over after that. The War on Terror wasn't a thing before 9/11, and the newscasts initially thought that it was a rogue small plane or helicopter that flew into the World Trade Center towers until the second one hit.
According to the Rock Island Arsenal, nearly 3,000 Americans died in the September 11th attacks on the Pentagon, Twin Towers, and of course, the heroic people on Flight 93 that fought back against the terrorist hijackers and crashed outside of Shanksville, PA.
History.com says it was a factor in creating the Department of Homeland Security. Air travel has certainly never been the same as it was before 9/11, with heightened security and a 9/11 fee on airplane tickets.
The Rock Island Arsenal ceremony will also honor the 7,075 military members and civilians in the Department of Defense who have died during the Global War on Terrorism.
