Busy Downtown Davenport One-Way To Become A Two-Way On This Date
Your traffic pattern is about to change in downtown Davenport.
It's a project that's been going on for years, Since the 80's, people have talked about making downtown Davenport's one-way roads into two-ways. In 2022, Davenport city council voted to convert 3rd & 4th Streets into two-ways.
You may have noticed lights going up on the opposite-facing side of the road on 3rd and now, we're not far from getting that two-way.
Now, a release from the city of Davenport says that, weather permitting, 3rd Street between River Drive and Marquette will become a two-way starting on Wednesday, November 6th at 5:00 a.m. (yes, November 6th is a Thursday, but that's from the city. Safe to assume it's one of the two days.)
The next road to be converted into a two-way will be downtown Davenport's 4th Street.
Why They Were Ever Even One-Ways
3rd & 4th were made one-ways back in the 1950's because it was easier access to the department stores downtown. One argument for making the change is that it's just dated now to have those streets as one-ways and it would help businesses on both sides of the roads to change traffic flow.
But there's more than the conversion from River Drive to Marquette. The proposal that the city council signed off on also extends the conversion to Division Street and eventually Telegraph Road.
Meanwhile, as for 4th Street, there's no word yet on when that two-way traffic will begin.
You can keep up with the latest on the 3rd Street conversion on the city's website.
