
Swimming Not Recommended at Over a Dozen Iowa Beaches
With recent heavy rains across portions of Eastern Iowa, over a dozen beaches in the state have posted swim warnings due to high levels of E. coli bacteria.
Are These Iowa Beaches Closed?
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources has stated that, despite the warning, none of the beaches are technically closed. A spokesperson stated that the DNR likes to present Iowans with the information, and they can make the choice that is best for them and their family.

Which Iowa Beaches Have Been Issued Warnings?
The Gazette reports that 13 Iowa beaches have been issued warnings due to high levels of E. coli. They include;
- Backbone Beach near Dundee
- Beeds Lake Beach near Hampton
- Black Hawk Beach in Sac County
- Bobwhite State Park Beach in Wayne County
- Lake Ahquabi Beach in Indianola
- Lake Darling Beach in Washington County
- Lake Manawa Beach in Council Bluffs
- Lake of Three Fires Beach in Taylor County
- Lower Pine Lake Beach in Eldora
- Nine Eagles Beach in Decatur County
- Pleasant Creek Lake Beach in Linn County
- Prairie Rose Beach in Shelby County
- Union Grove Beach near Gladbrock

How High are E. Coli Levels in Iowa Lakes?
The Gazette reports that water samples from Backbone State Park show exceptionally high E. coli levels. A sample from Backbone showed 24,000 organisms per 100 milliliters of water, well above the limit of 235. E. coli in the water often indicates fecal contamination, which, if ingested, can sicken swimmers, according to the Gazette.
